Stephen Warnock throws curveball at Newcastle United as potential striker target amid Yoane…

· 23 August 2025, 14:00

Newcastle United and Brentford appear to be locked in a stalemate over a deal for 28-year-old striker Yoane Wissa.

Despite Wissa's attempts to force through a move, it's looking increasingly likely that he will remain at Brentford, having returned to training with the first team.

Craig Hope said in his post-press conference video on YouTube on Friday that Newcastle were seeking definitive answers by the end of the day, and so far, we've not heard anything from either side.

It does now look very likely that the Magpies are going to have to look elsewhere, with the likes of Jorgen Strand Larsen and Alexander Sorloth mentioned as potential backup plans.

Stephen Warnock believes Newcastle should go for Jean-Philippe Mateta

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking on [The Sports](https://www.globalplayer.com/podcasts/episodes/7Drt5GD/) [Agents](https://www.globalplayer.com/podcasts/episodes/7Drt5GD/) podcast, former Liverpool player Stephen Warnock has thrown out a new name right out of left field that Newcastle could make a move for in the form of Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta.

> "I mean, Newcastle are at that stage at the moment that if they are to lose Isak, why wouldn't you look at Mateta?

>

> "He's one of the names that's not really been mentioned. A big thing with Mateta is his goals record is decent, and he's performed well, and he links up well, whereas Jackson is hugely frustrating, isn't he? The amount of times he gets caught offside.”

Crystal Palace won't want to part with Mateta

---------------------------------------------

There's probably a good reason he's not been mentioned, and that's Crystal Palace won't want to sell their biggest goal threat.

Mateta scored 17 goals for Palace last season and is already off the mark for them this season, scoring in Europe in midweek in Palace's first-ever European match.

At 28, Mateta is a sideways move from chasing Wissa, but we just don't see Crystal Palace letting go of him this late in the window.
