Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad are weighing up a shock move for Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes before the transfer deadline, according to The Sun.
The Portugal international turned down advances from Al-Hilal earlier this summer. He was happy to commit his future to the Red Devils, but there could be a late twist before the transfer window closes.
The Sun today claim that talks have already been held between Al-Ittihad and Fernandes’ camp.
The first contact with the player has been positive. The United captain has reportedly asked for £33 million per year including bonuses to make the switch to Al-Ittihad.
Fernandes has previously hinted that he would be prepared to leave if the club decide to cash in.
United could bolster midfield with Fernandes’ surprise exit
Fernandes made it clear that he did not want to join Al-Hilal earlier this year. The club have since bolstered the attack with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.
Cunha and Mbeumo could become undisputed starters in the attacking midfield department, thus meaning that Fernandes could operate in the centre of the park hereon.
The Portuguese is less creative from a deeper midfield role and has the tendency to lose possession. If Fernandes were to secure a shock exit before the transfer deadline, United may need to spend big on two midfielders.
United’s interest in Carlos Baleba has been well documented and Brighton & Hove Albion reportedly value him at £115 million. The Seagulls may require a major portion of the funds upfront to sanction his transfer.
Alongside him, United should pursue a deal for Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, who may likewise cost a premium fee. The Red Devils could easily secure moves for the duo if Al-Ittihad commit to a one-time payment.
United were seemingly open to selling Fernandes for £100m earlier this summer before his decision to stay put. The hierarchy will no doubt demand a similar package to sanction his sale in the coming days.
