A mural celebrating Arsenal’s imminent signing of Eberechi Eze has been vandalised just hours before the Gunners’ Premier League clash with Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium, with evidence strongly suggesting Tottenham Hotspur fans were responsible.

The incident adds another layer of tension to north London’s fierce rivalry, following Arsenal’s dramatic hijacking of Eze’s £67.5 million move from Crystal Palace, snatching the midfielder away from Spurs at the final hurdle.

The artwork, painted by well-known Arsenal-supporting street artist North Banksy, appeared on Wednesday night in a tunnel near the Danny Fiszman Bridge outside the Emirates. It depicted Eze in an Arsenal shirt performing his trademark celebration, alongside the words “All roads lead home”, a reference to his boyhood ties to Arsenal and his time in the club’s academy.

But by Saturday morning, images shared online revealed the mural had been defaced with splashes of white paint. The word “Yids”, a controversial term reclaimed by some Tottenham supporters was also scrawled nearby, pointing to Spurs fans as the likely culprits.

Well this is annoying.

All that hard work gone in seconds – a bit like Tottenham must feel about their Eze transfer dealings!

We will be back soon… 👀👀

The act of vandalism follows a dramatic week in the transfer market. Just days ago, Eze appeared destined for Tottenham after they agreed a deal with Crystal Palace. But Arsenal matched the bid, and with Eze a lifelong Gooner, the 27-year-old opted for the red half of north London.

He completed his medical on Friday and is expected to be unveiled over the weekend, although he will not feature against Leeds.

The deal, seen by many outlets as a sensational hijacking, has left Spurs fans frustrated after the club also missed out on other targets this summer.

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank addressed the disappointment ahead of his side’s clash with Manchester City, insisting the club only wants committed players. “To be very clear, I don’t want any players that don’t want to come to the club,” Frank said. “If they don’t want to wear this fantastic badge, we don’t want them here.”
