Report: Newcastle now want to sign ‘phenomenal’ Chelsea star alongside Jackson

Newcastle are among a host of Premier League clubs eyeing a late summer move for Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong, according to CaughtOffside.

The St James’ Park side, along with Manchester City, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth, are believed to be keeping a close eye on Acheampong’s situation with just over a week of the market left.

Chelsea are under no pressure to sell the 19-year-old before the transfer deadline, as he is seen as part of the Blues’ long-term future and is held in high regard by manager Enzo Maresca.

The Italian tactician, who handed Acheampong his first Premier League start in January, praised him as a ‘fantastic player’ following Chelsea’s 3-0 Conference League quarter-final win over Legia Warsaw in April.

Acheampong, who signed his first professional contract in December 2024, has a deal until June 2029 at Stamford Bridge.

According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea could entertain Acheampong’s departure on loan before the deadline, potentially to BlueCo-owned Strasbourg.

Talks are not believed to be at an advanced stage with any interested Premier League club, while the 'phenomenal' 19-year-old is also not expected to push for a move away from Stamford Bridge.

With Levi Colwill and Benoit Badiashile injured, Maresca now views Acheampong as a key part of his first-team squad, having handed him a start in Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace.

Acheampong played the full 90 minutes on the opening weekend of the Premier League but returned to the bench for Chelsea’s 5-1 win at West Ham United on Friday.

Newcastle are anticipating a busy end to the summer transfer window, as they are expected to upgrade Eddie Howe’s attacking options.

The Magpies remain keen on landing Brentford’s Yoane Wissa but are also looking at alternatives amid a deal for the 28-year-old Congolese international stalling.

According to GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle have also held talks for Chelsea outcast Nicolas Jackson, who has no future in West London following the summer arrivals of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro.
