Rare ally - Wayne Rooney lets rip on Alexander Isak for Liverpool transfer saga

Alexander Isak is under fire from all angles for his continuing conduct at Newcastle United.

Wayne Rooney would feel betrayed by Alexander Isak if he were a Newcastle United player.

Football fans across the country have been debating the Swede’s recent antics on Tyneside. Isak continues to down tools by training alone and refusing to play as he angles to join Liverpool.

On Tuesday, the 25-year-old fired a damning statement - accusing the club of broken promises on his future. Newcastle retaliated within hours - indicating a deal now appears unlikely - to dismiss Isak’s claims.

Eddie Howe gives Alexander Isak update

Eddie Howe, unsurprisingly, was grilled once again on the wantaway striker when he faced the press pack yesterday. He told reporters: “He's contracted to us, he's our player. My wish is that he would be playing on Monday night with us. But he won't be and that's regrettable.

"I have no doubt about how the players will feel. They will feel the same way I do. Alex is a fantastic player, he's a good person, a good character and a good lad. If Alex wanted to come back and play for us, the players would welcome him."

Wayne Rooney slams Alexander Isak

Speaking on his podcast, Premier League legend Rooney insisted he “would not want” Isak back at the club as a Newcastle player. He said: “If I’m a Newcastle player, I don’t want them back. Players leave football clubs, and that happens all the time, but there’s a way to go about it. You can’t go and strike.

“You can’t not turn up for training with your teammates and, if you want to leave the club or not, you have to be there for your teammates and be ready if needed. So, I think if I was a player, I wouldn’t want him back. He’s deserted you. He doesn’t want to be there.

“He doesn’t want to be your teammate. So, I wouldn’t want him back. Now, for the club, I think Newcastle are not happy with Isak’s behaviour because Liverpool want to sign him. But then on the flip side of that, Newcastle want to sign (Yoane) Wissa, who’s behaving the exact same way.

“I remember Anthony Gordon not playing for Everton because he wanted to go to Newcastle. So, you kind of have it both ways. But in terms of Isak’s teammates, I wouldn’t want him back.”

Alexander Isak statement in full

"I'm proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals with a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024-25,” he posted on Instagram. "First and foremost, I want to thank all my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who has supported me along the way. I'm not at the ceremony tonight.

“With everything going on, it didn't feel right to be there. I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.

“The reality is that promises were made - and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now - and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”
