Unai Emery’s message is to "keep calm" after the 1-0 defeat to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Villa were undone by a single goal from Dango Ouattara in the 12th minute, before Boubacar Kamara was forced off with an injury shortly after.

Emery’s side controlled the game and dominated possession, but created few goalscoring opportunities.

The defeat follows Villa’s 0-0 draw against Newcastle United last weekend, where they were also blunt in attack.

“We lost the match today because in the first 20 minutes, we weren't really performing or playing with the intensity we needed,” Emery said. “We reacted after conceding, dominated, and created chances. They defended our corners and had transitions. We avoided their attacks in transition, and we dominated.

“This is a very good example of how football is. Conceding the first goal makes it very hard to come back. We have to move on and continue working, trying to change some circumstances we have.

“We need to clarify some circumstances next week and try to strengthen our structure again. Last year, we needed time to achieve that. We competed well against Newcastle and had a red card. We accepted it.

“Today, we competed, but it was not enough. We conceded some moments on the field that we need to avoid. Once the transfer window closes, we will clarify everything. My message is to stay calm, move on, and continue doing the work we’re doing, while also being strong in our mentality.”

Emery added: “I was frustrated because we started losing some easy balls and didn’t win the defensive duels that we normally do. Of course, this is something we have to avoid in the coming weeks.”
