Tottenham weighing up a surprise summer push for Chelsea outcast

Tottenham Hotspur are considering making a move for out-of-favour Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku

In recent weeks, it emerged that Tottenham Hotspur wanted to bring in two new attackers following a failed deal for Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, as well as James Maddison sustaining an ACL rupture during the club’s pre-season tour of Asia.

Spurs have identified Manchester City winger Savinho and Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace are two primary targets to bolster their attacking ranks. While negotiations for Savinho have been slow due to a Manchester City official blocking his exit, Tottenham boss Thomas Frank felt he was about to sign Eze.

However, the Dane, along with millions of fans, were left stunned on Wednesday night as traditional rivals Arsenal hijacked the deal for Eze. Growing up as an Arsenal fan, the England international quickly changed his stance and decided to move to the Emirates Stadium. This has left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in total meltdown, and truth be told, Daniel Levy has to be fully blamed for fumbling the Eze deal.

Now, to save face, Daniel Levy and Co. have switched their focus to a Premier League forward as a key alternative to Eze.

Tottenham considering shock swoop for Chelsea outcast

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Tottenham are exploring a shock potential deal for out-of-favour Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku.

The France international is deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, and Bayern Munich have been pushing to sign him on loan for the 2025/26 season. However, the Club World Cup champions, at this juncture, are insistent that Christopher Nkunku must depart on a permanent basis, leaving the player’s future uncertain at the start of the new season.

The forward, who bounced back from an injury-ravaged debut season to score 15 goals in all competitions last term, is keen to resolve his future as quickly as possible and end his Chelsea nightmare. The aforementioned report adds that RB Leipzig are interested to re-sign the 27-year-old, but no direct club-to-club talks have taken place thus far, providing Spurs with a window of opportunity to pursue a deal.

Tottenham’s entry into the mix spices things up, with Frank desperate to add a creative forward to his ranks before the window slams shut.

Should Spurs make a move for Christopher Nkunku?

Christopher Nkunku could be worth the gamble for Spurs

Nkunku has no future at Chelsea, and it has been made clear via Enzo Maresca’s words too. From Tottenham’s perspective, he could be a gamble-worthy late-summer reinforcement. With Maddison ruled out for the foreseeable future and Son Heung-min moving to MLS, Frank’s squad has lacked creativity and depth in attacking areas.

Despite not pulling up trees across the capital, the French forward could still become a smart acquisition for the Lilywhites. The 27-year-old’s ability to play as a forward or attacking midfielder, coupled with his dynamism, flair and goal-scoring instinct, makes him an ideal fit for Frank’s system at N17. He has the qualities to carve open well-drilled defences, whilst the forward’s experience of playing at the highest level in Europe could come in handy for a Tottenham side competing in the Champions League this season.

If the valuation is practical, there is no reason why a move for Nkunku would not work out for Tottenham. A loan deal with an option to buy would be ideal, but the Blues are unlikely to sanction such a deal as they want to offload the ex-RB Leipzig star permanently.
