Brentford boss confirms reason for Yoane Wissa absence amid Newcastle links

The Yoane Wissa to Newcastle United saga continues to drag on.

Indeed, while it’s brilliant to hear that Wissa is desperate to join Newcastle during a summer in which the club have consistently been rejected by strikers, it’s hard to condone his behaviour.

Wissa is angry at Brentford for not letting him join Newcastle, who have seen a bid worth around £40million rejected by the London club.

It remains to be seen if Newcastle increase their offer. Wissa, while a fine player, will turn 29 next month and has at maximum two years left on his contract.

The DR Congo international appeared to have returned to team training earlier this week but the saga took another turn on Saturday when the Newcastle transfer target was left out of the Brentford squad who beat Aston Villa.

Speaking before that game, Keith Andrews explained why.

Brentford confirm why Yoane Wissa missed their game against Aston Villa

Andrews, who claimed his first win in charge of the club on Saturday thanks to Dango Ouattara’s goal, was quizzed about the forward before the game.

Given Wissa appeared to have been training again, it looked as if Brentford were set to welcome the forward back.

However, when news of his omission dropped, Andrews said (via Ben Jacobs on social media platform X): “It’s not right to involve him in the squad. The team is the focus and I felt that was the right thing to do.”

Yoane Wissa still hoping for Newcastle United move

Wissa wants to join Newcastle and is seemingly refusing to give up hope.

With the transfer window still open, there’s a chance he could end up at St James’ Park. Brentford, however, are unlikely to make things easy.

According to Craig Hope, the forward is still hoping to get his dream move to St James’.

There’s little doubt Wissa would be a great addition to the Newcastle United squad. He scored 19 Premier League goals last season and looks like a major upgrade on the version of Callum Wilson that Eddie Howe had at his disposal last season.

Still, it’s hard to get excited about the prospect of a player doing almost exactly what Alexander Isak is doing at Newcastle.
