Broncos defeat the Saints in preseason finale, 28-19

NEW ORLEANS, La. (WLBT) - The Saints fell short in the preseason finale against the Denver Broncos, losing 28-19.

It was Head Coach Kellen Moore’s last chance to evaluate his squad, especially the quarterback room, ahead of their regular season opener against the Arizona Cardinals on September 7th.

Quarterback Spencer Rattler got the starting nod in the final preseason game and had some good moments, finishing 5-of-8 for 43 yards. He also led the Saints on their first two scoring drives which led to field goals.

Rookie Tyler Shough entered the game in the second quarter and led the Saints on a field goal drive himself. He finished 12-of-20 for 102 yards and also ran in an 11-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Jake Haener played the last part of the game and finished 5-of-9 for 37 yards.

For the quarterback battle throughout the preseason, Rattler finished 30 of 43 for 295 yards with one touchdown and one interception while Shough was 36 of 53 for 333 with one touchdown, one interception, and a rushing touchdown.

Saints players that did not suit up for the game include defensive back Terrell Burgess, tackle Taliese Fuaga, tight end Taysom Hill, tight end Foster Moreau, defensive back Rico Payton, guard Trevor Penning, defensive tackle John Ridgway III, cornerback Alontae Taylor, and wide receiver Devaughn Vele.

Right tackle Landon Young left in the second quarter with a lower-body injury.

The Saints will return to the practice fields on Monday ahead of Tuesday’s deadline to reduce their roster to 53 players.
