MN Vikings Bring in Veteran QB for Workout

When the Minnesota Vikings took the field on Friday night against the Tennessee Titans they did so with Max Brosmer under center. The undrafted free agent from Minnesota has been the talk of camp. He did everything he could to cement a roster spot.

Despite Brosmer once again looking electric, it would still be a sizable leap to ask him to immediately hold down QB2 duties in the NFL. That’s exactly what the Vikings acquired Sam Howell for during the NFL draft.

Howell has basically played himself out of an opportunity, and that means Kevin O’Connell needs options. He’s looking at a new one on Saturday.

There is no way that Max Brosmer will clear waivers. He should be assumed as a member of the 53-man roster. Brett Rypien is a candidate for the practice squad if he can clear waivers. The Minnesota Vikings don’t have to be bothered with Sam Howell’s future, and Carson Wentz represents an option to replace him.

O’Connell has plenty of game type to indicate what Carson Wentz should be capable of. A workout means he wants to put him through the paces on his own and see if he can be another successful student in his quarterback class.

Wentz brings a local angle after being selected second overall in the 2016 NFL Draft out of FCS-powerhouse North Dakota State. He made the Pro Bowl and finished third in the MVP race during his second season with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Where has Carson Wentz been?

Short of his 2019 Comeback Player of the Year Award, it’s largely been downhill for Wentz. He had single-season stops with the Colts, Commanders, Rams, and Chiefs. Since starting all 17 games as the Colts one-year stopgap, he has played in just 13 games (nine starts) for his last three employers.

Wentz won a Super Bowl with the Eagles, but was not on the field. It was Nick Foles that quarterbacked the team to victory after Wentz suffered a torn-ACL. He watched from the sidelines last year as Patrick Mahomes’ backup, and saw Super Bowl defeat at the hands of those Eagles.

Across nine professional seasons Wentz has played in 98 games (94 starts). He owns a 62.7% completion rate and has 153 touchdowns with 67 interceptions. Although he hasn’t been much over the second-half of his career, Wentz has seen much more success than Howell while also learning on better teams.
