Tennessee Titans quarterback Cameron Ward talks leadership (Exclusive)

Leading is not something made for everyone. Some also do it in different ways. However you do it, it is needed, especially when it comes to sports. Cameron Ward has been a leader from his days at Incarnate Word, Washington State University, University of Miami, and, more than likely, back to his younger playing days. So stepping into a team that was 3-14 last season and providing leadership came second-nature to him. From the beginning in Nashville, he has been vocal and confident, and he is the person people look to for leadership, as if he were one of the veterans. And he has not disappointed.

Cameron has called his team and offense out, saying they were "mid" after one practice during training camp. He has also supported his receivers and tight ends, saying he believes they are top five in the NFL. And he has also been the one to take the pressure off and bring a light moment, like when the skirmish between Jeffery Simmons was talked about and made bigger headlines than he and Simmons probably ever thought it would. All of that is what a leader does, and as far as Ward is concerned, he feels his leadership has had a positive effect on the team, but with his teammates' help, of course.

"I just think it has its effect on knowing that we are able to win every game. And that is just how I think as a quarterback. I think every time I step on the field I am a difference-maker."

Ward also went on to mention his teammates surrounding him, especially his offensive line and receiving group:

"They surrounded me with a lot of talent, especially up front. Those five guys up there... and just the running backs and the receiving corps. I think those are gonna be the guys who help make my job easier, and I also gotta make their job easy."

If you had to describe Cameron Ward's leadership style up to this point, it would be calm yet stern and full of expectations, yet confident in the people around him. And as the Titans end preseason and eventually prepare for the Denver Broncos, his leadership will be needed even more than ever. He is the identifiable force on that offense and carries a lot of star power. And that star power and leadership could take the Titans to the heights they want to go. Ward knows it and believes it. The next thing is to see if he can translate that belief into wins and losses for the Titans. And as of right now, that is to be determined.
