The Kansas City Chiefs ended their preseason slate of games with a 29-27 loss to the Chicago Bears as Andy Reid’s team gears up for the start of the regular season.
We know the scoreline matters little, if anything, especially for the Chiefs, with the main goal being to evaluate the younger players and those on the roster bubble before the axe swings in a couple of days’ time.
But it was also a chance for the Chiefs starters to get some game time before the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1, and Reid liked what he saw from the entire unit.
“I thought the offensive line did a nice job, gave Pat time,” Reid said. “The run game, we were efficient in the run game, so starts up there. I thought the receivers caught the ball, tight end caught the ball, and everybody contributed. Pat looks smooth, confident, trust in that group. I thought it was pretty smooth operation. I mean, it’s preseason, but smooth operation, and we needed to get some reps there, and we got some reps. Everybody came out healthy.”
So, the offense got some game-like reps, and everyone avoided injury. Tick and Tick.
Patrick Mahomes (8 of 13 for 143 yards, one touchdown), Isiah Pacheco (three att, 21 yards, one touchdown, Rashee Rice (two rec, 13 yards, one touchdown), Tyquan Thornton (one rec, 58 yards), and Travis Kelce (two rec, 32 yards) all got their feet wet in the preseason finale.
There has been much debate as to whether starters should play in meaningless preseason games, but the Chiefs put most out there against the Bears, and got in the work they needed to, and now they can focus on Week 1.
With a “smooth operating” offense, the biggest takeaway from the preseason finale.
