Coventry City and Burnley rival European clubs for 21-year-old full-back

Coventry City are one of many sides, including Burnley, credited with an interest in Canadian defender Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty, according to reporter Rudy Galetti.

Coventry City are gearing up for another push at the Championship play-offs in 2025/26, determined to go one step further after falling agonisingly short last season. Under Frank Lampard’s guidance, the Sky Blues surged up the table to claim 5th place, a clear sign of progress and growing ambition.

Their campaign ended in heartbreak with a dramatic play-off defeat to Sunderland, but optimism remains strong that this could finally be the year promotion to the Premier League is secured. At the CBS Arena, transfer business is a major focus, with fresh additions viewed as essential to bolstering Lampard’s squad for the battles ahead.

So far, only three new faces have come through the door this summer, with Kaine Kesler-Hayden the only player to command a fee. Even so, Coventry have both the resources and the intent to invest further.

One player on their radar is Canadian talent Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty. According to reporter Rudy Galetti, Coventry City are one of many clubs with an eye on the Canadian.

Premier League Burnley, along with Villarreal and Wolfsburg, are also named as sides keen on the 21-year-old. The player is ready to move to Europe and could leave his current side, CF Montreal, this summer.

More on rumoured Coventry City target Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty

Marshall-Rutty began his career with Brampton East SC before joining Rush Canada Academy and later the Toronto FC Academy, entering the U13 side in 2016–17 and rising through the youth ranks. In December 2018, he became the youngest homegrown signing for Toronto FC II, and in January 2020, at just 15, he signed a first-team contract with Toronto FC, the youngest in club history.

He debuted that October against the Philadelphia Union, again setting a club record for youngest appearance. In August 2024, he was traded to CF Montréal for $850,000 in General Allocation Money, with incentives up to $1.3 million and a sell-on clause for Toronto.

After 15 appearances, he was loaned to Charlotte FC in April 2025 for the rest of the season. Internationally, he earned five caps with Canada’s U15 team in 2019.

Coventry City have a platform they must build on

The second half of last season was superb for Coventry City. They have started this year right where they left off too.

The Sky Blues have picked up seven points from their opening three games. Lampard’s side have also scored a massive 12 goals in their last two games, against Derby County and Queens Park Rangers.

Some fresh additions like Marshall-Rutty will no doubt help the Sky Blues. Something special could be on the cards under Lampard.
