Manchester United are said to be closing in on a deal ahead of their clash with Fulham.
Manchester United look to be closing in on a move for a new goalkeeper as they prepare to face Fulham on Sunday. The Red Devils have been busy this summer as they look to put a disastrous season of last in the rear-view mirror.
Ruben Amorim will be under pressure to deliver this season, but United have really put their weight behind him, with the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo all snapped up.
Reports now claim United will add competition at the goalkeeper position as they prepare to take on Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday. Andre Onana has been through bouts of disappointing form during his time at Old Trafford, while Altay Bayindir has often been seen as more of a number two. The Turkish international made the defining mistake in Arsenal’s win over United last weekend.
According to Gazet van Antwerpen, United have held positive talks with Royal Antwerp keeper Senne Lammens. It has been reported that the Belgian side are asking for £17.3million, and it’s added that a transfer is ‘moving closer’.
Lammens is expected to be in Antwerp’s squad for their game this Sunday, but he could then be on his way to United. Fulham will be glad a transfer is not happening before this Sunday, with United particularly vulnerable between the sticks.
Bayindir looked very vulnerable at set-pieces last weekend, while Onana is pretty error-prone, and Marco Silva will want his men to exploit whichever applies, depending on which goalkeeper Amorim ends up going with.
United team news
Speaking ahead of the Fulham game, Amorim has confirmed that Onana is available to play after a recent injury issue. He said: “Onana is ready to play like last week, so we will see in the game who is going to be keeper.”
Elsewhere, Amorim confirmed that Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui will both be absent through injury. He added: “Licha is out, Nous is out. The rest of the guys are fit and ready to play."
Speaking about Fulham, Amorim continued: “It’s always hard to play against Fulham. They have a clear identity. Marco Silva is really experienced and really smart, he can change several things, cover several spaces and you can see game-by-game, he tries to do that. They are really comfortable because they have the experience, they understand the league is long so they will feel confident and relaxed for the game so it’s going to be a tough match. But if you look at the schedule, every game is really hard to play, so it’s going to be a tough match.”
Returning the compliment, Fulham boss Silva said: “We are playing against a great side. I know last season is not the way they wanted. This season, they have spent heavily in the market and signed a striker that all in the market were looking for in Europe. For us, it is very important and it is going to be a very demanding Premier League.”
