Report: Nottingham Forest star wanted by Bundesliga club, he's slid down the pecking order

Nottingham Forest have signed four players this week but the club are not finished in the transfer market just yet.

The hot topic of discussion right now is centred around Nuno Espirito Santo. The Portuguese head coach will have his future discussed at boardroom level after today’s game with Crystal Palace, with Espirito Santo having a disagreement with Edu.

Ange Postecoglou wants the Forest job, however, the hope will be that Forest can secure a second win this season when they face Palace and then convince Espirito Santo to continue the good work he’s been doing.

Forest signed Omari Hutchinson, James McAtee, Arnaud Kalimuendo and Douglas Luiz this week and as a result, some of the current crop are now facing a fight to stay at Forest ahead of the transfer deadline.

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi eyed for Bundesliga return

According to German outlet Sport, Werder Bremen are keen to sign Awoniyi on a season-long loan deal before the transfer window slams shut.

The 27-year-old talisman has slid down the pecking order this week, with Kalimuendo coming into the club and Igor Jesus signing for the Reds earlier in the summer.

Awoniyi has a pedigree in the Bundesliga. Forest lured him from Union Berlin in the summer of 2022 and the previous season he bagged 20 goals from 43 appearances in the German top-flight.

Logic suggests that Awoniyi isn’t going to play much at Forest this season and a loan move to rediscover his form and fitness does feel like a positive move for all parties.

Loan move is ideal for Awoniyi

All might not be lost for Awoniyi at Forest, with his contract not due to expire until 2027 at the City Ground.

As a result, letting him leave on loan to a club that plays in a league that he’s familiar with makes perfect sense and should allow him plenty of opportunities to get himself back to his best.

Forest might well have outgrown Awoniyi at this point, but he could come back and stake a claim for a place again in the final year of his contract.

If the club does decide to move on from him, a solid campaign at Werder Bremen could well place him in the shop window and attract some offers for him.
