Star left out of matchday squad ahead of 'imminent' Manchester United transfer

The latest Man Utd transfer news as they look to sign a new goalkeeper before deadline day.

Senne Lammens has reportedly been left out of the Royal Antwerp squad to face KV Mechelen on Sunday afternoon as he nears a move to Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old has already agreed a move to Old Trafford in principle, with talks ongoing between United and the Belgian side to agree a transfer package. It is understood Antwerp would like a total package in the region of £21.66 million (€25m) for their star shot-stopper before deadline day.

Ruben Amorim would like to refresh the goalkeeper at his disposal and wants to have stronger competition for the starting role in his line up. United are also mindful they need a reliable back-up option at the very least, given Andre Onana is expected to feature at the Africa Cup of Nations for Cameroon later in the year.

Onana is still expected to be regarded as the first-choice goalkeeper at Old Trafford, but Lammens is viewed as a strong competitor for the goalkeeper spot. Even if he does not replace Onana in goal straightaway, it is hoped the proposed arrival of the Belgian goalkeeper will push him to perform better.

Royal Antwerp are in action when they host KV Mechelen in the Belgian Pro League on Sunday afternoon (12:30pm BST), with Lammens not included in the matchday squad. The Guardian claims Lammens has been ‘stood down’ from today’s league match, with United expecting his move to become official ‘imminently’.

Over the weekend, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claimed United made an opening offer to sign the goalkeeper for €17m plus a further €3m in add ons. "Manchester United remain focused on the opportunity to bring in a new goalkeeper before the end of the window," he said.

"The player they want is Senne Lammens at Royal Antwerp. My understanding remains that the player is keen on a move to Manchester United, contacts took place again on Saturday with Manchester United and Antwerp. The two clubs are talking, at the moment, not yet a done deal but advancing.”
