Everton vs Brighton Preview: Premier League, Matchday 2, 2025

David Moyes' Everton will play their first ever competitive match at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium as the host of Brighton.

Both teams come off the back of results that they would consider as disappointing, as the Toffees fell to defeat against Leeds, whilst Brighton could only manage a draw at home against Fulham.

Everton really need to put in a strong response to their dismal display at Elland Road, where they struggled to create many chances of any real threat. Meanwhile, the Seagulls will also be looking for an improvement on the display from last weekend.

This is a fixture which Brighton prevailed in last year, winning 3-0 at Goodison Park as Mitoma and Welbeck both got their names on the scoresheet on that day. It has been quite a tough fixture for Everton as of late, who have failed to win any of their last four home matches against Brighton.

The Toffees have often had slow starts at home, losing their first home match in the last three seasons. Moyes will be hoping that the new stadium brings his side some new luck.

Team News:

Everton

Jarrad Branthwaite remains out with a hamstring injury, whilst David Moyes has also confirmed that the duo of Vitaliy Mykolenko and Nathan Patterson will not be ready for the Brighton match.

There was some good news for Everton, which was the fact that Adam Aznou returned to first-team training on Friday and could be in line to make the squad against Brighton.

Jack Grealish is expected to be selected from the start in this one as the Toffees look for a significant improvement on the attacking performance on display at Elland Road.

Brighton

For Brighton, Adam Webster remains the only long-term injury as the defender is set to be out for the next few months at least. Solly March also remains out, but is getting closer to a return for the Seagulls.

Jack Hinshelwood has trained the entirety of this week for Brighton, so he will likely be ready to play a part in this one. Whether it's off the bench or from the start is unclear.

Carlos Baleba is also expected to feature in this one, but Fabian Hurzeler made it clear that the Cameroonian will not be playing the full 90 minutes against Everton.

Predicted Lineups:

Everton:

Pickford; O'Brien, Tarkowski, Keane, Garner; Gueye, Iroegbunam; Ndiaye, Dewsbury-Hall, Grealish; Barry

Brighton:

Verbruggen; Wieffer, Van Hecke, Dunk, De Cuyper; Baleba, O'Riley, Ayari; Minteh, Rutter, Mitoma

Key Players:

Everton - Jack Grealish

This match is the perfect opportunity for Grealish to prove himself to the Everton fans after a small cameo against Leeds. The winger certainly contains the quality to cause his opponents an issue.

Given his experience in one of the top Premier League teams, Grealish looks like he will play a vital role in leading the Everton frontline this season.

Everton's best form of attack is usually set pieces. Grealish can certainly help with winning fouls in dangerous positions - something that he has always been good at throughout his career.

Brighton - Carlos Baleba

The midfielder will look to run the centre of the park against Everton. After the Toffees' lacklustre performance in the week when they had little control, Baleba will fancy his chances.

If the Cameroonian can establish control early on for the Seagulls, then it could be a very long game for an Everton side that looked spineless at times against Leeds.
