Sunday Headlines: Former Cats look to survive NFL roster cuts

As the NFL preseason wraps up, teams now are preparing to trim their rosters to 53 players.

The deadline to trim the roster is Tuesday at 4 p.m. Several former Kentucky Wildcats will be fighting for roster spots as teams make their final cuts to the roster in preparation for the regular season.

Of course, Will Levis is on injured reserve with the Titans, and Josh Paschal is on the Lions’ active-non football injury list, but could still be activated for the season.

Looking at other former Wildcats around the league, Josh Hines Allen signed a major five-year extension last year, so his situation with the Jaguars is pretty safe. Maxwell Hairston and Deone Walker were just drafted to the Bills, so they are all but guaranteed to be on the roster. It’s very likely Ray Davis sticks on the Bills roster as well.

Wan’Dale Robinson and Dru Phillips are expected to make the Giants roster, and Zion Childress has really turned heads in the preseason with the Cowboys. Chris Rodriguez could be taking on a bigger role in Washington. Elsewhere around the league, D’Eryk Jackson and Quinton Bohanna are competing for roster spots in Seattle, and Trevin Wallace and J.J. Weaver are competing in Carolina. Several projections have Wallace landing a spot on the roster, while Weaver seems less likely at this point.

Here are a few other players to keep an eye on.

* TE Brenden Bates, Browns

* CB Brandin Echols, Steelers

* QB Devin Leary, Ravens

* OG Luke Fortner, Saints

* OT Landon Young, Saints

* IOL Eli Cox, Texans

* LB Jamin Davis, Jets

* S Mike Edwards, Chiefs

* OT Marques Cox, Broncos

* S Keidron Smith, Broncos

* EDGE Bud Dupree, Chargers

* LB Jamon Johnson, Packers

* CB Carrington Valentine, Packers

* OL Darian Kinnard, Eagles

This time of year is always a tough time for these players hoping to land a roster spot. Hopefully we see several of our former Cats stick on a roster or practice squad somewhere.

What do you think Kentucky’s record will be?

Who will step up among this group.

Kentucky brought in guys with proven experience getting after the QB.

Hopefully they pick up another win today!

Looking forward to seeing Jasper on the court this season.

The Dan Mullen era out west starts with a W.

Apparently it’s being handled internally.

Who will be this year’s champion?

The series has been all Boston lately.

A tough break for the Phillies.
