Aston Villa were beaten 1-0 at Brentford on Saturday, unable to score the goal that their dominance deserved.

Unai Emery’s men have now gone two games without scoring - they drew 0-0 with Newcastle United in their season opener - and it is becoming a worry for Villa fans.

Indeed, it has been a difficult summer transfer window for the club as they again sell good players to help comply with spending restrictions laid down by the Premier League and UEFA.

It is a situation slammed on Match of the Day by pundits Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, a former Villa player.

Shearer, the former Newcastle star and fan, told viewers: “I've said before that the PSR situation doesn't sit well with me in terms of what they can and can't spend.

“I mean, Unai Emery has had six transfer windows as Villa manager and they've made a profit of £10m.

“Obviously salaries are hampering them too because I don't think PSR was brought in for this situation, for the likes of Aston Villa when they've clearly got owners who have got the money for the club to be ambitious.

“So it's a really difficult situation for them to be in, but they looked blunt today, so they need a little bit of help in certain positions - 17 shots today, but only 2 on target.

Richards added: “I was in the Villa team that got relegated, so to see the transformation there, to now get into the Champions League, but they can't buy any players, it’s ridiculous. They are having to sell academy products as well, so it’s just not sitting right with me.”
