Cleveland Browns Initial 53 Roster Projection: It Could get Weird

Linebacker (5)

Carson Schwesinger, Devin Bush, Mohamoud Diabate, Winston Reid, Easton Mascarenas-Arnold

Jerome Baker is my top candidate for roster shenanigans. If the Browns release him, he's not subject to waivers. They could use that to hide a player temporarily, potentially Mascarenas. Devin Bush could potentially be subject to suspension, which could also create the roster spot for Baker to re-sign after the dust has settled.

The season-ending injury to Nathaniel 'Bookie' Watson is unfortunate as he was having an impressive preseason. However, that does allow them to keep another player they like.

Corner (6)

Denzel Ward, Greg Newsome II, Cameron Mitchell, Myles Harden, Nik Needham, Dom Jones

Easily the group that inspires the least confidence in terms of projection, after Ward and Newsome, it's Thunderdome. All bets are off. They have played a ton of different players throughout training camp. LaMareon James is someone the Browns signed for a decent roster bonus as an undrafted free agent. It seems like they might be almost hiding him in hopes they can get him to the practice squad. Chigozie Anusiem is someone else that repped with the ones.

This might be the position the Browns prioritize with a waiver claim. Even if that's the case, they aren't going to go below six corners until it's absolutely necessary.

Safety (5)

Grant Delpit, Ronnie Hickman, Donovan McMillon, Rayshawn Jenkins, Christopher Edmonds

This seems like a position group where the Browns could temporarily hold a player only to then try to get to the practice squad after a series of roster moves. The option that stands out for that honor could be Edmonds. The Browns typically like to have five on the roster because of the amount of three-safety sets they utilize. It's not impossible they could rely on the practice squad to be responsible for the fifth player early in the season.

Special Teams (3)

Andre Szmyt, Corey Bojorquez, Rex Sunahara

Whether or not the Browns plan to truly give Szmyt the job or see what else is available, they can't go back to Dustin Hopkins. The sense of dread is palpable when he takes the field for a field goal or extra point.
