Andre Onana is adamant he will stay at Manchester United amid the club’s interest in Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
Lammens, 23, has been left out of Royal Antwerp’s league game against Mechelen today so as not to jeopardise a potential move to United.
The MEN revealed on Saturday that Onana has been recalled to the United squad for their Premier League fixture at Fulham today and that he is under consideration for a recall.
Sources say Onana “will 100% stay” at United, despite the possibility of Lammens coming in. External sources have suggested Onana’s position is not as certain before the transfer deadline on September 1.
Unless Lammens spends this season on loan at Antwerp after a transfer, it is highly unlikely United would accommodate four senior goalkeepers.
Tom Heaton signed a new one-year contract in June, which raises the possibility of a departure for second-choice goalie Altay Bayindir.
Bayindir was at fault for Arsenal’s winning goal in United’s opening Premier League defeat last week and he has played 12 times for the club in two years.
The 27-year-old Turkey international has been United’s main goalkeeper since last month as Onana missed the entirety of the pre-season schedule with a hamstring injury. Bayindir started in four of United’s five pre-season friendlies.
The MEN revealed in January that United wanted a new goalkeeper to compete with Onana. Lammens, who was called up to the Belgium national team squad earlier this year but is yet to attain a cap, would fit that billing. United considered signing Bart Verbruggen, the same age as Lammens, from Anderlecht two years ago.
United sources reiterated on Friday that any goalkeeper incoming would not be a headline name. United made a fruitless approach to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez on loan but did not move for Paris Saint-Germain outcast Gianluigi Donnarumma.
