It is no secret to anyone the San Francisco 49ers are in a tough situation at wide receiver. With tons of injuries and a recent suspension for Demarcus Robinson, they may get some luck soon with ex-Niner Kendrick Bourne potentially falling into their lap.
The Niners made a move to address their receiver issues by trading for Skyy Moore with the Kansas City Chiefs. It was not a major move, but it adds some needed depth.
San Francisco could be able to add some more depth soon.
With NFL teams having to trim rosters down to 53 players in the wake of the preseason concluding, it means there are going to be a lot of players on the chopping block.
One player who could be a cut candidate is Bourne of the New England Patriots.
49ers may aim to bring back Kendrick Bourne (if Patriots cut him)
Bourne has missed most of training camp and all of the preseason due to a leg injury. He didn't play in New England's final preseason game and certainly seems like a player who could be let go when rosters get trimmed, especially since there is a new regime in New England led by head coach Mike Vrabel.
After spending his first four NFL seasons with the 49ers where he racked up 1,769 receiving yards and 11 touchdown catches, Bourne has spent the last four seasons with the Pats. In those four seasons, he has 1,945 receiving yards with 11 touchdowns.
Bourne has been thought of as a high-energy player throughout his career. He is a good guy to have in a locker room and obviously has an understanding of head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense since he spent four years in it.
The big question will be whether Bourne's leg injury will prohibit him from being ready for the start of the regular season. San Francisco already has so many wide receiver injuries as it is, so it would probably be reluctant to add another player who is banged up.
A reunion with Bourne has been floated in the past and some have even suggested the Niners should trade for him amid all of their wide receiver woes.
That may not be necessary if New England decides to cut him, which could allow Bourne to fall right into San Francisco's lap ahead of the regular season.
