The second match of the Premier League campaign saw two newly promoted sides go head to head at Turf Moor. As Burnley played host to Sunderland.
With the home side coming off a heavy defeat to Tottenham Hotspur whilst the away side, Sunderland, were full of confidence after three goals to nil win against West Ham United.
This game was billed as an early six pointer in the bid for survival despite it being so early on in the season. Both sides would still have seen this as an important game to pick up maximum points and give themselves confidence for the rest of the campaign ahead.
With the Clarets coming out victorious and picking up their first three points of the season which has now seen the three promoted sides each pick up a win in the fastest time since the 2016-17 Premier League season.
Burnley ran out two nil winners through goals from Josh Cullen and Jaidon Anthony, respectively.
Story of the match
Burnley began the game slow, like they did against Tottenham, which allowed Sunderland to create two key chances in the match.
The first chance came in the fourth minute from a set piece which saw, defender, Dan Ballard find space to head the ball across the six yard box for Eliezar Mayenda who squandered his chance as Martin Dubravka produced a fantastic save from close range.
However, Dan Ballard suffered an injury from this set piece and was shortly replaced by Jenson Seelt on the ninth minute.
Sunderland had another glorious chance to take the lead in the match on the 14th minute. As Simon Adingra played an acute pass down Sunderland's left hand side towards Chemsdine Talbi who could only chip the ball over the on-rushing Dubravka and see his effort narrowly go wide of the far post.
From this chance onwards Burnley grew into the game and thought they themselves had taken a one goal lead as Lyle Foster bundled his way through on goal and fired his effort into the back of the net.
However, VAR intervened and it was deemed that Foster had fouled Seelt on his way to winning the ball.
For the rest of the first half the match became a 50/50 affair with neither team creating many chances.
With the best chance of the first half falling Burnley's way with the last move of the half. As JacobBruun Larsen**** and Hannibal Mejbri worked the ball well to allow the Tunisian midfielder to put a cross into the 18 yard box. Which saw Anthony head the ball narrowly wide of the near post.
The Clarets came quick out the blocks, after the half time interval, as they immediately took the lead in the 47th minute.
After a lovely passing move which saw Quilindschy Hartman out wide on Burnley's left hand side. He played a short pass into Anthony who played a lovely back heel flick in to Josh Cullen's path who curled the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal from just inside the 18 yard box.
This goal allowed **Burnley**to sit in and allow Sunderland to have the ball making the visitors play a style of football that is not to the strengths of their players.
And it allowed Burnley to play to their strengths of being a strong defensive unit as Sunderland never looked like threatening the Burnley goal as Maxime Esteve and Ekdal put their body in front of everything and cleared every crossing attempt from the Black Cats.
Scott Parker made two changes in the 69th minute as Lesley Ugochukwu needed replacing after picking up cramp and Bruun Larsen needing to be replaced after not having the most impactful game. Both being replaced by Josh Laurent and Oliver Sonne, respectively.
The two changes led to a formation change for the Clarets as they were able to defend in a back five with Oliver Sonne being suited to the right wing back role. This tactical change made the hosts even harder to break down.
In the 78th minute defender Esteve managed to intercept a pass from Patrick Roberts towards the path of Wilson Isidor conceding a corner in the process. But also picking up an injury in doing so which Parker and the Burnley fans will be hoping isn't a serious injury to their star defender.
Esteve managed to play on until the 83rd minute which saw him replaced for experienced defender Joe Worrall. As well as Loum Tchaouna replacing Hannibal.
After further defending for the Clarets, they managed to hit the away side on the counter attack in the 88th minute which saw captain Cullen play a first time pass ahead of the on running Anthony. The winger was able to take the ball past Roefs in the Sunderland goal and fire his shot into the roof of the net to avoid the defender that made his way back to goal line.
Giving the east Lancashire side a two goal lead to defend as ten minutes of additional time were added on due to a brief stoppage in play due to floodlight issues.
The hosts looked like adding a third goal to top off their afternoon and send their fans home even happier. As Dutch full back Hartman drove his side forward and played a pass towards Tchaouna. The young French forward latched onto and let off a first time shot that hit the outside of the left sided post.
The final whistle blew shortly after ending the match in a two goal to nil win for the Clarets.
The Irish midfielder and Burnley captain put in yet another impressive display.
As he picked up a goal and assist for in his sides victory whilst also being imperious on the ball and being full of energy not allowing the opposite midfielders time to settle in the match.
Leading from example he showed the grit and determination needed from his side in order to battle valiantly for survival in the Premier League.
