Steelers' DK Metcalf Drops Major Hint About Aaron Rodgers' Future

The 2025 NFL regular season is right around the corner and the Pittsburgh Steelers are now gearing up for their season opener against the New York Jets on September 7. Aaron Rodgers and company want to get off to a strong start.

With Super Bowl aspirations clearly in mind, the Steelers put together an aggressive offseason. Rodgers was one of the big additions, while DK Metcalf, Jalen Ramsey, and Jonnu Smith were also all acquired via trade. T.J. Watt was also given a long-term lucrative contract extension.

Rodgers has been fairly open about the 2025 season likely being his last. However, could he be convinced to change his mind?

Metcalf spoke out recently during an appearance on the "Not Just Football with Cam Heyward" show and hinted about the future Hall of Fame quarterback potentially playing in 2026 as well.

"I think we're gonna do some special things this year. Looking forward to it," Metcalf said. "And you know, maybe we can run it back."

After that comment, Rodgers smiled and responded with just one word.

"Maybe," he said.

It's quite possible that Rodgers could thoroughly enjoy his 2025 season in Pittsburgh. At the end of the year, depending on how the season goes, he might want to extend his tenure with the storied franchise by another year.

No one knows quite what to expect from the 41-year-old quarterback. He will turn 42 in December, but still showed last season with the Jets that he can play at a high level.

During the 2024 season, Rodgers completed 63 percent of his pass attempts for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Those numbers would be a huge upgrade for the Steelers over what they had under center last year.

While there are still some questions Pittsburgh needs to answer at the wide receiver position, Rodgers will have a great group of weapons to work with. He's also clearly excited about his new opportunity and he has been gushing about how much he enjoys working with head coach Mike Tomlin.

A return in 2026 might very well be possible, but the Steelers should prepare themselves for Rodgers to ride off into the sunset after the 2025 season. That being said, he doesn't seem to have shut the door yet on continuing his career.
