Taylor Elgersma threw his first career NFL touchdown pass during Saturday’s pre-season finale at Lambeau Field. The London, Ont. native won’t have his throw count in regular season statistics, but he is on the board at the NFL level.

Elgersma found rookie Will Sheppard for a three-yard score in the second quarter as he continues to fight for a roster spot with Sean Clifford to be the Green Bay Packers number three quarterback.

He finished Saturday going six of eight for a total of 33 yards.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was asked about his performance after the game.

“You gotta go back and look at it (the video) but I thought for the most part he did a pretty good job,” LaFleur said.

A reporter then followed up with a question about Elgersma’s improvised plays.

“Shoot, you gotta find a way, there were two plays that he did,” added Lafleur.

For the entire pre-season, Elgersma went 16-23 for 166 yards and one touchdown while Clifford went 9-17 for 44 yards and no touchdowns.

He went through some growing pains during training camp, and game action as he adjusts to American-style football which is 11 vs 11 rather than 12 vs 12 in Canada.

He will learn his fate on Tuesday when the Packers have to cut their roster down to 53 players. Either Elgersma or Clifford will likely be the third quarterback and placed on the practice squad.
