Vikings' Trade of Sam Howell Could Lead To Second Deal

All offseason long, the Minnesota Vikings have been linked as a team who could make a move at the quarterback position.

While J.J. McCarthy has been the clear starter, the situation behind him hasn't been great. Sam Howell was unable to prove that he could be a reliable backup. That led to a move being made following the team's preseason finale.

On Sunday morning, the Vikings decided to trade Sam Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles. In exchange, they received a fifth-round pick in 2026 and a seventh-round selection in 2027. They also gave up a sixth-round pick in 2026.

Adding another fifth-round pick and an additional seventh-round pick could help Minnesota make a secondary move.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter took to X after the trade was made to share a very intriguing detail. The Vikings have been searching for wide receiver help and the Howell trade could help them make something happen.

Adam Thielen has been a name heavily mentioned as a possible target for Minnesota. Schefter shared that point in his report as well.

"By adding an extra pick via trade this morning, the Vikings now have added ammunition to go trade for a wide receiver," Schefter wrote. "They have inquired on former Vikings WR Adam Thielen, but Carolina has been reluctant to deal the respected and productive veteran."

To replace Howell, the Vikings brought in former starting quarterback Carson Wentz. That move is a big upgrade behind McCarthy.

Not only will Wentz provide Minnesota with a potential starter if McCarthy goes down with an injury, but he will help the second-year quarterback develop. Wentz has a lot of NFL experience and will be a great presence for the locker room.

It will be interesting to see if the Vikings are able to make another move for a wide receiver. Bringing Thielen home would be something the fans would love. While the Carolina Panthers may not be willing to deal him, there are other players around the league Minnesota could look to acquire.

Expect to hear more about the Vikings in the near future. With the regular season right around the corner, the front office will be working hard to improve the roster.
