Ruben Amorim has insisted he has picked "the best players to win the game" after being asked why Altay Bayindir has been chosen ahead of Andre Onana against Fulham.
Manchester United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal last weekend and Bayindir was at fault.
The Turkey international failed to connect properly after trying to punch away an Arsenal corner, but Amorim has persisted with Bayindir against Fulham and named Onana on the bench.
After recovering from a hamstring injury, Onana trained three times before the opening game of the season. However, he was omitted from the squad against Arsenal and has been forced to settle for a place on the bench upon his return.
Amorim told Sky Sports: "It's the same kind of decision a manager has to do. I try to see the game, I try to imagine the next game. I try to put the best players to win the game. So I did that."
United's head coach has also named Benjamin Sesko on the bench at Craven Cottage.
"We try to imagine what is going to happen during the game," said Amorim on the decision. "Our game needs to be consistent, the way we control the game. We need to have options to play a different game from the bench.
"Sesko has had two weeks with us so it's trying to understand everything. I try to understand how these small things are for the player. I talk to the players often and sometimes we need to wait a little bit in order to help the player. We just want to win the game."
United are interested in signing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp before the transfer deadline, which raises further doubts over the futures of Bayindir and Onana at Old Trafford.
Lammens, 23, was left out of Royal Antwerp’s league game against Mechelen on Sunday.
