Vikings Change QB Room, Acquire Super Bowl Champion Backup

The Minnesota Vikings reshuffled their quarterback room on Sunday.

According to ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter, Minnesota made a pair of corresponding moves that will provide J.J. McCarthy with a new backup.

First, Schefter reported that the Vikings are trading quarterback Sam Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles.

“Trade: Vikings are sending QB Sam Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles, per ESPN sources,” Schefter wrote.

“Howell now will join Jalen Hurts and Tanner McKee in the Eagles QB room.”

Schefter soon specified the trade specifics:

“Trade terms: Minnesota receives 5th in 2026 and a 7th in 2027 … Philly gets QB Sam Howell and a 6th in 2026.”

Minutes after reporting the Howell trade, Schefter reported that the Vikings were signing a veteran quarterback to replace Howell.

“Vikings reached agreement with Carson Wentz, per source,” Schefter posted on X.

Wentz, 32, backed up Patrick Mahomes on the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024. He was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles with the No. 2 overall selection in the 2016 NFL draft and spent his first five seasons in Philly, winning a Super Bowl ring in 2018 (although Nick Foles was QB1 at the time, due to Wentz being injured).

Following his Eagles tenure, Wentz played a season apiece for the Indianapolis Colts (2021), Washington Commanders (2022) and Los Angeles Rams (2023) before joining the Chiefs, meaning that the Vikings have now become his fifth team in as many seasons.

Schefter provided additional context about Minnesota’s moves on Sunday, insinuating that more moves might be on the way.

“By adding an extra pick via trade this morning, the Vikings now have added ammunition to go trade for a wide receiver,” Schefter wrote. “They have inquired on former Vikings WR Adam Thielen, but Carolina has been reluctant to deal the respected and productive veteran.”

Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, the Howell trade appears to have been an insurance move with QB2 McKee expected to miss some time, per ESPN insider Mike Tannenbaum.

“With this trade looks like QB #2 Tanner McKee will miss some regular season time with his finger injury,” Tannenbaum wrote.
