Sunderland defender Trai Hume reckoned the Sunderland team must learn quickly from Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Burnley, stressing the importance of being clinical at Premier League level.

The Black Cats competed well for long spells against Burnley, but the hosts struck twice in the second half to claim all three points.Reflecting on the performance, Hume admitted that Sunderland need to be more ruthless in key moments if they are to turn performances into results.

“We were right in the match for large periods,” he explained to safc.com.

“But at this level, you’ve got to take your chances when they come. Burnley did that today and it made the difference. It’s something we need to learn from.”

The Northern Ireland international stressed that the coming days will be important to review where improvements can be made. At the same time, Hume underlined the importance of shifting focus to a crucial week ahead, with back-to-back fixtures at the Stadium of Light.

“This week is about analysing where we could have done things differently,” he said. “But we can’t dwell on it too long. We’ve got Huddersfield in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night and then Brentford at home in the league on Saturday. They are two really important games for us to respond in.”

Hume also reserved special praise for the travelling supporters, who once again backed the side from the first whistle to the last.

“The fans were unbelievable again,” he added.

“Even at the end, when it wasn’t going our way, they were still there supporting us. That means so much to the lads, and we know how important they’re going to be across the season. We’ll give everything to make sure we bounce back.”
