Bruno Fernandes misses 'worst penalty ever' for Man Utd after VAR controversy

Bruno Fernandes missed the 'worst penalty ever' for Manchester United against Fulham.

United could have opened their account for the season from the penalty spot at Craven Cottage, but Fernandes failed to break the deadlock from 12 yards.

With 37 minutes on the clock, and the game level at 0-0, United's captain stepped up from the spot after VAR intervened on Calvin Bassey throwing Mason Mount to the floor from a corner.

But Fernandes slammed the penalty high and wide, with the Hammersmith End stopping the ball from flying into the River Thames.

Fans took to social media to mock Fernandes' effort from the spot, with one calling it: "The worst penalty miss ever."

A second said: "That is one of the worst penalties I’ve ever seen from Bruno Fernandes." A third added: "Bruno Fernandes with the worst penalty shot I've ever seen." While another mocked: "That was the worst pen I've ever seen Bruno take."

Before the penalty was taken, Fernandes was left furious at the referee Chris Kavanagh after he walked into the midfielder during his penalty routine. The 30-year-old threw his arms in the air at the official and appeared to never regain his composure.

Kavanagh awarded the penalty after being sent to the screen following baffling defending from Bassey, who swung Mount to the floor in a brainless and pointless move.
