Everton picked up the three points against Brighton in the first professional game at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday.

David Moyes guided his Everton side to a 2-0 victory with goals from Iliman Ndiaye and James Garner.

Jordan Pickford saved Danny Welbeck’s penalty to prevent the Seagulls from clawing their way back into the game.

Don Hutchison believes Brighton didn’t deserve their penalty

The visitors were given a glorious chance to halve the deficit when they were awarded a penalty kick in the second half.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall blocked Yankuba Minteh’s shot, and the ball hit his hand, but it was in close proximity, and he did extend his arm to stop it from hitting the target.

However, the VAR checked it and decided to stick with Stuart Attwell’s decision, who was the on-field referee.

Don Hutchison believes that there was nothing Dewsbury-Hall, who joined from Chelsea, could have done to get his hand out of the way.

He told Premier League Productions on 24 August at 4:10pm: “Page 73 says no handball offence due to close proximity. So, where on Earth, if you’re Dewsbury-Hall, you throw your body to get the block on. If proximity is a law and Page 73 says that it is, what on Earth can you do? How can you get out of the way?”

David Moyes will be thrilled with the Everton display

Everton will undoubtedly feel aggrieved by the penalty decision that went against them in their match against Brighton, a call that likely shifted the game’s momentum and left fans and players frustrated.

The Toffees, under Moyes, showed resilience and defensive grit, but the contentious refereeing decision overshadowed their efforts, leaving a sense of injustice.

Despite the Seagulls’ reputation for fluid, attacking football, Everton displayed tactical discipline and clinical finishing, securing a valuable result.

Moyes will be particularly pleased with his squad’s work rate and ability to capitalise on key moments, showcasing their growing cohesion.

The Scotsman will celebrate his side’s hard-fought effort, which highlights their potential to compete against strong Premier League opposition.

Hopefully, this result can be a catalyst for better performances in the coming weeks as the Blues will aim to remain in the top half.
