The Man United and Garnacho situation

Man United have been looking to get rid of Garnacho from their books this entire window. The player is no longer in Ruben Amorim’s plans. Hence, he’s been “banished” from the squad, alongside other fringe players such as Malacia, Sancho and Antony.

The player has been strongly linked to United’s top 6 rivals, Chelsea. The deal with Chelsea looks to be edging ever so close. However, it hasn’t materialised yet, with 9 days to go in the window. Here’s a rundown of what’s taken place so far, and what new updates we have on this situation.

Garnacho and Man United: what happened?

When Garnacho broke through, he was seen as the star kid who would help United get back to where they belong. He was the quick, explosive winger who made United fans get out of their seats. He was seen as one of the most exciting youngsters in the world as an 18-year-old.

However, his journey ever since has not been as good as he would’ve expected. The player has had consistency issues on the pitch, following his initial breakthrough season. He seems to struggle with decision-making in the final 3rd, although we have seen glimpses of his talent here and there.

Things went from bad to worse during 24/25 for United as a whole. Ruben Amorim’s arrival in November 2024, didn’t help Garnacho’s cause. While Garnacho did have some spells of form under the Portuguese coach, the decision-making and consistency issues were glaringly visible.

Things went out of hand during the Europa League final. Immediately after the loss against Spurs in the final, Garnacho spoke out against Amorim’s decision to bench the player. The winger said, “I played every round until reaching the final, I helped the team, but playing 20 minutes today… I don‘t know”, after going on a rant about the season. He also hinted at a potential departure at that moment.

Off-field issues

As United’s environment started crumbling post the Sir Alex Ferguson era, there has been an increase in off-field issues related to the club. Garnacho was no stranger. While players like Marcus Rashford’s off-field issues largely stem from problematic reports by the British media, Garnacho’s case is different. The Argentine’s issues seemingly stem from his behaviour.

Alejandro’s brother, Roberto Garnacho, is active on Twitter, but only to make matters worse for Alejandro. Roberto, with the help of his brother, allegedly leaked confidential team news online, sparking outrage within the club and the fans. He reportedly issued an ultimatum to his club, claiming he would refuse to play for the club for the next 6-12 months if the Chelsea move doesn’t go through. This statement did not sit well with the fans. The player was also seen vaping in a recent image, which doesn’t help his already tarnished image.

Garnacho and Chelsea

A move away, in general, is in Garnacho’s best interests, as it could act as a reset for his career. Moving away from the very toxic atmosphere at United may do him a lot of good, allowing him to get back to his best. It seems as though he has his eyes set on Chelsea. He has made his intentions very clear, Chelsea very clear- Chelsea or nothing. However, Chelsea will have to sell Christopher Nkunku and/or Nicolas Jackson first in order to sign Garnacho. These sales have blocked Garnacho’s deal from materialising yet.

🚨 Plan confirmed for both of Garnacho and Simons to go to Chelsea. The Garnacho deal is happening. For Simons, still some work to do, also waiting for Nkunku and Jackson to leave. Chelsea confident to make the Simons deal happen. (@FabrizioRomano)

In fact, recent reports suggest that Garnacho has rejected the chance to play for Bayern Munich. This comes as a surprise, considering Bayern’s stature as one of the biggest clubs in the world. A player in decline rejecting such a chance just goes to show how much he trusts the Blues’ project.
