Olimpico 'operation' underway as Liverpool in talks over left-back loan exit

Liverpool and Roma have been in talks over a prospective loan deal for Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas, according to a report.

The former Olympiacos man was hitherto Andy Robertson's perpetual backup at Anfield, and he has now been demoted to third choice following the arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.

Tsimikas failed to make the matchday squad for Liverpool's opening Premier League match with Bournemouthtwo Fridays ago, and he is not expected to be involved when the Reds tackle Newcastle United on Monday night either.

The 29-year-old's contract with the reigning Premier League champions expires at the end of the 2026-27 season, and given his peripheral standing in the squad, there is understandably no extension in sight.

Even though Robertson's own future is the subject of some debate, Tsimikas will almost certainly have to leave this summer if he is to enjoy regular first-team football, and he was a rumoured target of Nottingham Forest's earlier in the window.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Serie A side Roma are now discussing a possible season-long loan deal for Tsimikas, although the operation will not be an easy one to pull off.

The Giallorossi currently have Angelino as their first-choice left-sided option, and the report claims that Tsimikas is seen as a backup for the former Manchester City protege rather than an out-and-out starter.

Roma will apparently have a clearer idea this week of whether a deal for Tsimikas is feasible, and the report does not mention whether any transaction would include an option or obligation to sign the Greece international at the end of the 2025-26 season.

Affectionately dubbed the 'Greek Scouser', Tsimikas has become a fan favourite at Liverpool since joining shortly after their Premier League title win in 2020, making 115 appearances for the Reds in all tournaments and laying on 18 assists.

However, the defender started just nine Premier League matches during Liverpool's run to top-flight glory last season, and he failed to make it off the bench in a further 16 games in the top division.

Who else could leave Liverpool alongside Tsimikas?

While Liverpool's extortionate summer spending has inevitably made many a headline, the Reds have been quietly going about their business on the selling side too, generating almost £200m through outgoings since the market reopened.

The permanent exits of Ben Doak, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Jarell Quansah, Tyler Morton, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Nat Phillips have all boosted Liverpool's coffers, while another six players have left on loan.

Tsimikas is now one of the leading candidates to follow the aforementioned octet out of the door, while fellow out-of-favour defenders Calvin Ramsay and Rhys Williams may seek pastures new as well, although their injury issues could potentially scupper a switch to a new destination.

Further forward, Stefan Bajcetic may need to arrange a move elsewhere if he is to enjoy regular game time in 2025-26, while Harvey Elliott is allegedly finalising an exit to a European club.

Much has been made of Liverpool's lack of attacking squad depth this summer, but a former Reds UCL finalist believes that his old club will cope with just one more specific signing.
