In a critical update for the Dallas Cowboys‘ season, star CB Trevon Diggs passed his physical and will be activated from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to the active roster, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday. It’s huge news for Diggs, who’s been insisting he’ll play Week 1 this whole time, despite missing all of training camp.

While this news isn’t a guarantee Diggs will be ready to play Week 1, it’s some positive momentum in that direction. The Cowboys desperately need Diggs as soon as possible, especially considering all the unknowns surrounding their other defensive star, ED Micah Parsons. Whether he’s ready to go to start the year or shortly thereafter, being activated off the PUP list is a big step.

Trevon Diggs’ Return Huge News for Dallas Cowboys’ Cornerback Room

With the uncertainty surrounding Diggs’ timeline, the Cowboys’ depth chart at cornerback was a major concern. DaRond Bland is a stud and has one of the starting spots on lockdown, but third-round rookie Shavon Revel is recovering from a torn ACL he suffered at East Carolina last September, and is unlikely to be available to open the season.

Key depth CB Caelan Carson is dealing with an injury of his own, and he operated as one of Dallas’ primary backups last year. Kemon Hall appears to have won the starting nickelback job against Zion Childress, and Israel Mukuamu could factor into the rotation as well. Former first-round pick and trade acquisition Kaiir Elam has had his moments throughout camp and is likely the top backup on the outside with Revel out.

Diggs underwent knee surgery in the offseason after missing much of the 2023 season with a different injury. His recovery has been deliberate, and his return from the PUP list is fantastic news for a Cowboys team with question marks behind him. Now it’s just a matter of how soon he returns to the field.

Micah Parsons Contract Situation Still Not Close to a Resolution

The biggest story in Dallas this summer has been the bizarre situation surrounding Parsons’ contract. He’s arguably the best defensive player in the NFL and is a perennial All-Pro. Despite his obvious star status, there’s been very little momentum towards a new deal.

Parsons is set to play this season on the fifth-year option from his rookie contract. That’s highly unusual for a player of his caliber, and its puts the Cowboys in a tricky situation where they’ll be forced to franchise tag him next offseason to avoid losing him to another team with no compensation. That’s if Parsons doesn’t force a trade from the team, which he’s been aiming to do. He formally requested a trade a few weeks back.

Both Parsons and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones have been throwing shots at each other through the media, and now Dallas HC Brian Schotteneheimer said he’s speak to Parsons about his “behavior” after a photo of him lying on a training table during a preseason game went viral. The relationship between the two sides is growing more fractured, it would seem.
