'Triggered me': 3/10 Man United ace reveals what went wrong with spot-kick vs Fulham

Manchester United were left frustrated by a 1-1 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage in the Premier League on Sunday.

An own-goal from Rodrigo Muniz gave Man United the lead, only for Emile Smith-Rowe to bring Fulham level moments later.

The game turned on its head in the 33rd minute when Bruno Fernandes squandered a golden chance from the spot.

Fernandes stepped up to take the penalty but sent it flying over the bar, sparking wild celebrations from the Fulham faithful.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Fernandes admitted that he struck the ball poorly and let his side down.

He said: “I was upset. As a penalty-taker, you have your own routines, your own things that you do.

“It upset me because the referee didn’t apologise. That is what triggered me in that moment but that’s not the excuse for missing the penalty.

“I had a very bad hit on the ball. I put my foot too under the ball and that’s why it ended up going over the bar.”

Our post-match ratings handed Fernandes a miserable 3/10, underlining a night to forget for the Portuguese playmaker.

The 30-year-old is usually very reliable from the spot, with his last missed penalty coming in 2023.

However, he looked visibly rattled as he lined up his run.

Moments later, his woes deepened as he was dispossessed far too cheaply by a Fulham attacker.

With the arrival of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, Amorim wants Fernandes to play in a deeper midfield role, and he will need time to adapt.

The Portuguese midfielder is at his best when given the freedom to run and launch attacks.

Life in a midfield pivot is no walk in the park as it demands discipline, security, and restraint over flair.

Fernandes has not been at his best in the first two games and his poor form is letting Amorim and his team down.
