NBA Card Sells for Almost $13 Million

A signed sports collectible card featuring NBA legends Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant brought in a historic haul Saturday night. The card sold at auction for $12.932 million, breaking the record for the most ever paid for a sports card.

More specifically, the multi-million dollar card was the 2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Dual Logoman Autographs Jordan & Bryant card, numbered 1-of-1. The sale price from Saturday eclipsed the previous record price of $12.6 million, which was spent to acquire the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card in August 2022.

The card was sold with Heritage Auctions. [In ESPN’s piece about the memorabilia news](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/46061949/holy-grail-jordan-bryant-sports-card-sells-record-129m), Chris Ivy, Heritage’s director of sports auctions, noted Upper Deck charged $500 for one five-card pack/box at the 2003-04 release of the Exquisite cards.

“It’s the pinnacle as far as modern card collectors are concerned, and this is the only time there’s been Jordan and Kobe autographed Logomans,” Ivy told ESPN. “Another one can’t be created. It’s always been looked at by modern basketball collectors as a holy grail.”

While the card sold for a gaudy amount, it still wasn’t enough to make it the most expensive sports collectible ever. That honor still goes to Babe Ruth’s 1932 World Series “called shot” jersey, which sold for $24.12 million last summer.

Coincidentally, this sports writer was eyeing a bobblehead of former Portland Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews on Facebook Marketplace over the weekend. The price was $5. Much more within budget.
