New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll has a muddled quarterback room to sort out as the season approaches. Veterans like Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston lead the group, fan favorite Tommy DeVito is in the mix, but preseason standout rookie Jaxson Dart could be the most intriguing of the quartet.
Dart has gone 32-of-47 passing for 372 yards and three touchdowns in as many appearances. The Giants fanbase, who hasn't had a reliable arm at the position since Eli Manning, has clung to the young quarterback out of Ole Miss.
But will he have a chance to even be a backup in this deep New York quarterback room? When Daboll was asked just that, his answer was short and vague.
"We'll see," the head coach said when asked if Dart will be the backup.
Daboll, who has publicly praised Dart throughout the preseason, has no reason to commit to his standing on the depth chart just yet. He has stamped Wilson as the starting quarterback going back to July but doesn't need to name a backup until at least the official 53-man roster is released. Wilson signed a one-year, $10.5 million deal with New York in the offseason.
Still, it's a mystery if Dart's development has been enough to leap a veteran like Jameis Winston for the QB2 role.

Giants fans hope Dart could be the backup and even one day lead the team into their future as the starter. But Daboll's comments show he still wants the flexibility to put Dart below both veterans if he's not ready to step in yet.
The good news for everyone is there will be a more definite answer when roster cuts come on August 26th.
