Man United vs Fulham: Bayindir’s mixed bag, Amorim’s sub woes&what we learned

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham in the Premier League at Craven Cottage on Sunday evening.

Read on as we look at five things we learned from the fixture.

New season, same Man United

Man United’s display against Arsenal was encouraging, but they could not build on it against Fulham.

United started strongly for the second consecutive game. They registered 52 percent possession in the first half, two big chances, but could not score.

United have now failed to score in their last 29 league games since the start of last season- only Genoa (30) have gone a longer run without scoring in the top five leagues in Europe, per OptaJoe.

Altay Bayindir’s mix bag performance

The Turkey international made two good saves to prevent Fulham from opening the scoring and almost set up Matheus Cunha for United’s opener with a perfect long-range pass in the first half.

Despite those positives, he struggled with set-pieces again, as he assumed the wrong position during corner kicks.

Ruben Amorim’s poor substitutions

The Portuguese’s decision to bring in Ugarte almost proved costly, as Man United lost total control to Fulham when he came on.

His decision to introduce Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven instead of attacking-minded players like Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee is also questionable.

Patrick Dorgu flops & Amad Diallo disappoints

The Denmark international looked bright in pre-season and fared well against Arsenal, but was back to his old self.

He did not complete any of the two crosses he attempted, won two of his eight ground duels and lost possession 18 times – the most of any United player.

Diallo did not justify his start, failing to make any key passes, create any chances, or complete the only dribble he attempted, and he registered just one shot on target.

Solid Matthijs de Ligt

The Dutchman was solid again as the central centre-back, ensuring Rodrigo Muniz had a quiet game.

He was dominant in his duels, assumed good positioning and was also good in possession, misplacing just two of his passes.
