The New York Jets have been gauging the trade market, looking for wide receivers.

It appears a target has emerged for the green and white, Detroit Lions pass catcher Tim Patrick.

“A name to keep an eye on: Lions wide receiver Tim Patrick, who could be cut and has ties to both Glenn and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand from Detroit and Mougey from being in Denver last year,” Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic wrote.

Other Media and Insiders Connect the Jets-Patrick Dots

Eric Edholm of the NFL Media Group listed Patrick as a potential “cut or trade candidate” this week.

“By nearly all measures, Patrick was a success story for the Lions in 2024, returning from two straight seasons missed because of injury to play 16 games (nine starts) and catch 33 passes for 394 yards and three TDs. But Patrick appears to have fallen behind on this year’s depth chart, with rookie Isaac TeSlaa’s emergence helping push Patrick down,” Edholm revealed.

“If the Lions are comfortable with their experience level at the position, they could cut ties with Patrick. I could see a team such as the Jets seeking a reliable veteran receiver like Patrick, who’s also a quality blocker,” Edholm added.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini said wide receiver is a need for the Jets and name-dropped Patrick as an option to watch.

Going into the last PS game/roster cutdown, the #Jets have a number of needs. Already addressed DT (Phillips and Briggs). Other positions:

1. WR (Alec Pierce, Tim Patrick Jackson Meeks, Tyler Scott, et al. Pierce would have to be a trade. Others could shake free. Romeo Doubs has…

In March, Cimini revealed that Patrick was a “projected target” for the Jets before he signed a one-year $2.5 million contract with Detroit.

Some Info on Patrick’s Potential Fit With the Jets

The former Utah product entered the league as an undrafted free agent following the 2017 NFL draft.

He bounced around a few NFL teams for the first couple of months of his career before finding the Denver Broncos.

Patrick spent seven years with Denver, where he crossed over with current Jets general manager Darren Mougey.

During that stretch, Patrick racked up 143 receptions for 2,009 receiving yards, and he scored 12 touchdowns. He missed his final two seasons with the Broncos due to devastating season-ending injuries: a torn ACL and a torn Achilles respectively.

In 2024, Patrick made his way to the Detroit Lions. That is where he crossed over with current Jets head coach Aaron Glenn.

Last season, Patrick finished with 33 receptions for 394 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Set Expectations Appropriately so You Don’t Get Disappointed

Patrick is familiar with the new Jets regime. He knows the offense after working with Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand in Detroit.

However, Patrick wouldn’t be a savior for the Jets.

He would add solid depth, leadership, someone who knows the system, but generally speaking, he is just a guy.

Garrett Wilson is the straw that stirs the drink. The Jets are searching for a Robin to his Batman, but they’re unlikely to find that answer during last-second roster cuts and through small trades before the season.

Patrick would be a solid add if the opportunity presents itself for the Jets either via cuts or the trade market, but set expectations at the right level for that move.
