EAGAN, M.N. (Valley News Live) -On Saturday August 23, reports surfaced on social media that free agent quarterback, Carson Wentz, was present at the Minnesota Vikings TCO Performance Centre.
While the unofficial depth chart for the Vikings had Sam Howell listed in the QB2 spot followed by Max Brosmer and Brett Rypien, none of the three performed well enough during fall camp or preseason games to give the Vikings confidence that they had adequate relief in the event that they needed it. Although the undrafted rookie, Brosmer, does show promise for the future, sources say they wanted more experience behind McCarthy.
In order to make room on the roster for Wentz, the Vikings have traded Howell to the reigning Super Bowl Champions, the Philadelphia Eagles. Along with Howell, the Eagles also receive a 2026 sixth-round pick, while the Vikings acquire a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round selection. Reports also confirm that the team will be releasing quarterback Brett Rypien.
Wentz and his experience could be exactly what the Vikings need heading into their season opener at Chicago on September 8. Selected by the Eagles with the number 2 pick in 2016, Wentz spent the first five years of his NFL career as an Eagle, starting in all 68 regular season games that he played there. He missed the Super Bowl run made by the Eagles in 2017 due to a torn ACL and MCL suffered in week 14. Wentz was on pace for an MVP season, in 13 games played the Quarterback threw for 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns, and only 7 interceptions. Still, he was a principal force in delivering the city of Philadelphia their first Super Bowl ring.
Most recently, the signal-caller has spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs serving as the next man up behind Patrick Mahomes. He saw game action on 3 occasions with the Chiefs and started in the season finale where he completed 10 out of 17 passes for 98 yards.
The NDSU graduate won five FCS Championships with the Bison, serving as the starting Quarterback in the 2014 and 2015 championship wins.
