For better or worse, the Buffalo Bills are not afraid to run things back with players.
The latest proof of that is defensive tackle Jordan Phillips. On Sunday night, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Phillips visited the team earlier in the day. Pelissero added that Phillips is expected to sign with the team later this week.
A source told Syracuse.com that Phillips would be getting signed to the main roster, not the practice squad.
Buffalo’s defensive tackle room seemed set in place before the news of Phillips’ imminent return was reported. The Bills were expected to go with Ed Oliver, DaQuan Jones, T.J. Sanders, Deone Walker and DeWayne Carter as their top-five defensive tackles with Larry Ogunjobi serving a suspension at the start of the year. Phillips’ addition leaves questions to be answered.
This will be Phillips’ fourth stint in Buffalo. He joined the team last season after being released by the Dallas Cowboys in early November for his third stint. Upon his return to the Bills, Phillips expressed his excitement.
“Seeing the smiles, and being actually wanted, it’s a hell of a drug, you know what I mean? You can do a lot for people when it’s in the right environment,” said Phillips, who said he’s fully healed. “I’m an acquired taste, and (the Bills) like my taste.”
Phillips joined the league in 2015 as a second-round pick with the Miami Dolphins. After being released by the team in 2018, Buffalo claimed the defensive tackle off waivers. He re-signed with the team in 2019 and registered a career-high 9.5 sacks that season.
Phillips would go on to join the Arizona Cardinals in 2020 on a three-year, $30 million contract. He would play two seasons in Arizona before being released by the team. That once again led Phillips to Buffalo where he remained through the 2023 season.
