Danny Welbeck should have blasted his penalty down the middle at Everton.
That was the view of former Watford team-mate Troy Deeney after the [Albion](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/albion/) forward was denied by Jordan Pickford.
Welbeck wasted a glorious chance to eat into the Toffees’ 2-0 lead and put home nerves on edge.
He went low to the keeper’s left and Pickford, who had consulted data before the spot-kick, read it comfortably.
Deeney told Match Of The Day viewers: “As a former penalty-taker, I’m thinking about the moment.
“It’s the 77th minute. You have got this feeling now if you score all the momentum is with you.
“That short run-up doesn’t feel like it’s a natural run-up but this is the biggest tell for me.
“Just watch as he hits it with his right foot. It comes off his heel, it’s not a clean hit
“I would go down the middle in that situation because it would take a lot for Jordan Pickford to stand in that environment.
“Go down the middle, get it to 2-1 and now all the anxiety builds.”
Former England goalkeeper Rob Green felt Welbeck made it too easy for Pickford.
He said: “You are looking for various different tells and it is easier with a short run-up.
“From the first step, down to the type of movement he makes.
“Even down to what foot he starts his run-up off.
“You can see Jordan Pickford is further over to the left-hand side so there are so many giveaways within this.
“The final giveaway is the angle of Danny Welbeck’s foot.
“If you are good enough to wait that long, he can’t put it in any other direction but that side.”
A close-up of information on Pickford’s water bottle showed he had also prepared research on Matt O’Riley, Georginio Rutter and Max De Cuyper from penalties.
