The Golden State Warriors are in desperation mode, and it’s easy to see why.
Until they resolve their standoff with Jonathan Kuminga, it is nearly impossible for them to make any additions this summer. On top of that, their core of Draymond Green, Jimmy Butler, and Stephen Curry is not getting any younger, and the constriction of their championship window is weighing heavily on the team.
As a result, the Warriors have shown interest in Trey Murphy III, although what they would offer the New Orleans Pelicans in a trade remains to be seen, and New Orleans, to their credit, seems to be pushing a hard bargain.
After all, in theory, a healthy lineup of Herb Jones, Murphy III, Dejounte Murray, Zion Williamson, and Jordan Poole should be able to make some noise.
Murphy III broke out last season, averaging a career-high 21.2 points, and the Warriors aren’t the only team with interest. The San Antonio Spurs are also sharks in the water, and they can offer a lot more than Golden State.
“Sources say that the Warriors have a strong affinity for Trey Murphy III and have made outreach to New Orleans as recently as this summer,” wrote insider Jake Fischer.
“Yet sources say that the Pelicans, to be clear, have batted away calls for the 25-year-old, valuing him highly. The two-way forward will be playing on a contract in 2025-26 — at precisely $25 million — as desirable as his talent. Another team known to have registered trade interest in Murphy, sources say, is San Antonio.”
The Spurs, with De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper, already have a crowded backcourt, although Murphy III could take a scoring load away from Devin Vassell as an off-ball option.
After adding Luke Kornet and drafting Harper and Carer Bryant this summer, one shouldn’t expect the Spurs to have much gas left in the tank this offseason, although it’s impossible to fully count them out.
