Fernandes missed his penalty.

Manchester United drew 1-1 with Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

[United](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/manchester-united-fc) started the game brilliantly with Matheus Cunha going close a couple of times. Fulham weathered the storm and improved, but the hosts conceded a penalty in the 36th minute when Calvin Bassey fouled Mason Mount. Bruno Fernandes stepped up to take the penalty and sent it over the bar.

United came out fighting in the second half and drew first blood as Leny Yoro's header deflected in off Rodrigo Muniz, only for Fulham to respond through substitute Emile Smith Rowe to ensure the points were shared at Craven Cottage.

Here are the talking points from the game and some moments you might have missed:

**Fernandes changed his technique**

Death, taxes and Fernandes scoring penalties? Apparently not. Fernandes is usually an outstanding penalty taker, but he dramatically fluffed his lines when United were awarded a penalty against Fulham on Sunday.

Mount was wrestled to the ground by Bassey from a corner and VAR reviewed the incident. Fernandes immediately picked up the ball and held it tightly while VAR investigated.

The decision was obvious once the reply was shown and the referee pointed to the spot, but there was an extra delay while Fernandes lined up his spot kick and perhaps that unsettled him.

Fernandes did not look like his usual composed self and he decided to change his run-up technique after bumping into the referee - it didn't work.

The Portugal international underperformed against Fulham and was responsible for failing to track Emile Smith Rowe when the Fulham substitute equalised in the 73rd minute.

**Appreciation for Yoro**

Fulham smelt an opportunity at the beginning of the second half, which led to a moment of panic for Yoro when a well-weighted ball was played over his head to Josh King.

King's acceleration was impressive and he latched onto the pass. He looked to be through on goal for a brief moment, only for Yoro to remarkably recover with a great challenge.

It was fine margins for Yoro - he needed to get the tackle right because he would have been sent off if he had got it wrong. Thankfully, his tackle was executed perfectly and his teammates showed their appreciation.

Altay Bayindir tapped Yoro on the head, while Luke Shaw and Matthijs de Ligt applauded.

**The new chant for Yoro**

Shortly after recovering brilliantly to deny King, Yoro went up the other end of the pitch and helped break the deadlock from a corner. Yoro's header was heavily deflected, but he did not care about how it went in.

Yoro was subsequently serenaded by the away section, with "du, du, du, Leny Yoro" heard for the first time. Although the Frenchman deserves a more creative chant, it's not a bad place to start.

The 19-year-old grew in confidence last season, which wasn't an easy thing to do as part of a team that failed most weeks.

United have failed to keep a clean sheet in both of their Premier League games so far this season. Having said that, the back-three of Yoro, De Ligt and Shaw have performed well.

**Amad frustration**

Amad made his first start of the new season in the right wing-back role. He predominantly played in that position in pre-season, but there is an argument that he might be wasted there.

There was a sign of frustration from Amad in the first half when he slapped his hands against his thigh, seemingly because he wasn't involved as much as he would have liked to have been.

Bryan Mbeumo did the bulk of the attacking work down the right and Amad was left to deal with Ryan Sessegnon, who Fulham fans wanted to get on the ball.

There was a moment when Sessegnon skipped beyond Amad, but the 23-year-old recovered and was applauded by Amorim. Amad provided more in defensive situations against Fulham than attacking ones, purely because of his position, and fans might want to see him moved higher up the pitch.

**Hiding behind a smile?**

Bayindir was at fault against Arsenal in the opening game of the season, failing to properly connect with a corner for the matchwinner, but Amorim persisted with him at Craven Cottage and named Andre Onana on the bench.

Onana stepped off the team bus with his headphones on. He showed little emotion, although he seemed in good spirits when he emerged to warm up alongside Bayindir before the game.

Goalkeepers often have a good relationship and there was no sign of any ill feeling between the pair as they were put through their paces. Onana was spotted joking with goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital and he was able to mask his disappointment at being named on the bench upon his return to the squad.

Was Onana hiding behind a smile? He will not be happy about not starting, but his performances were not good enough last season and it's his own fault for giving Amorim a decision to make.
