'Internally': Fabrizio Romano shares what Newcastle United hope to happen with Alexander Isak…

Newcastle United player Alexander Isak has not played a single game for the club since May, with his intentions on leaving clear.

Fans were rocked by a bombshell report in July which confirmed that the 25-year-old wanted to explore his options away from Tyneside after three seasons with the club.

Alexander Isak was undoubtedly Newcastle United’s most valuable player in the 2024/25 campaign, scoring 23 Premier League goals while helping the Magpies win their first major trophy since 1969.

However, nobody could have predicted how the Swede would lose the trust of the fans when the players were celebrating Champions League qualification at St James’ Park.

Isak claims promises made to him were broken by Newcastle, perhaps regarding a new contract or a move away this summer. Eddie Howe confirmed that a conversation did take place with Isak towards the end of the season, but refused to elaborate on the details.

While Isak is currently training on his own, Fabrizio Romano has provided a surprising update ahead of the transfer window’s closure.

Newcastle United staff preparing for Alexander Isak’s return after Liverpool clash

Newcastle are gearing up to play Liverpool at St James’ Park in what will surely be an exciting game under the lights. Howe thinks the Newcastle fans will be electric, and the players will certainly need noise to give them an advantage against the defending Premier League champions.

Isak will not play for Newcastle against Liverpool, with Anthony Gordon the likely alternative after his start against Aston Villa.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

While the Sweden international is not currently training with the first team, there has always been hope that he can kick on and return. Now, Romano has shared what the club are thinking for after Monday night’s game.

“From Tuesday, we will understand more on the Alexander Isak situation,” he said.

“Whether he is going to Liverpool, or whether Newcastle are going to be able to keep him at the club and change his mind. Newcastle internally hope that this week after the game Alexander Isak can return to training after the game on Monday. Newcastle really hope that.

“Newcastle internally have this feeling that they want to convince Alexander Isak to be back in training after the game on Monday. Liverpool remain in their position. They want Isak; they will attack for Isak, but it depends on Newcastle.

“This story completely depends on Newcastle. Isak wants to go to Liverpool, Isak wants to play for Liverpool, Liverpool want to go for Isak, Liverpool are prepared to pay, but Newcastle are the ones who decide, and Newcastle will do their best to keep the player.”

Alexander Isak returning to training would be huge for Newcastle United

While Isak has completely lost the trust of the Newcastle fans, he can still claw his way out of the situation.

In the midst of everything, one must remember that Isak is a top-class player and an asset to any Premier League team. If he wants to leave next summer, then the club will surely be more than happy to oblige, as long as it is formalised in writing.

There was talk of Isak getting a new contract at Newcastle, and while that feels like a long shot now, signing a new deal with the Magpies could play in their favour if certain clauses are included.

Either way, the transfer window closes in a week, and Newcastle remain hopeful that Isak will stay on Tyneside until January at least.
