Wolves are aiming to bring in further forward options in the final week of the transfer window
The new Premier League season is underway and Wolverhampton Wanderers have seen first-hand that there is still work to be done.
Wolves currently sit in 19th place after two matches played, beginning the season in the relegation zone once again as one of only two sides to have lost both matches so far.
The manner of defeat in the second half at home to Manchester City was worrying, while the Old Gold rarely threatened against Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth and fans - and even the manager - have called for more transfer activity as a result. The fact all three promoted sides have already won their first game of the season makes the situation all the more pertinent to deal with.
Attacking midfielders Jhon Arias and Fer Lopez have already been brought in this summer but the worry lies in who will replace the goalscoring exploits of Matheus Cunha, an issue Wolves may look to address on the transfer market.
Romano: Wolves submit bid for forward
Reported by Fabrizio Romano on X, Wolves are stepping up their pursuit of Getafe and Nigeria forward Christantus Uche, submitting an ‘official bid’ worth €20million (£17.3m) for the 22-year-old.
Uche registered four goals and six assists last season in his first season in La Liga since completing a transfer from AD Ceuta last summer. He can also be deployed across the midfield but often starts in the striker position for Getafe, notching a goal and an assist in their opening fixture of the new season against Celta Vigo on August 17.
Romano said: “Wolves have submitted official bid to Getafe worth €20m for Christantus Uche. Negotiations underway to get deal done as #WWFC want new striker asap. Talks ongoing with player’s camp, as @LiamKeen_Star reports.”
Wolves attacking options important before deadline
Wolves and head coach Vitor Pereira know that the last week of the transfer window could be crucial as his side aim to avoid another relegation battle in what could be a competitive Premier League season.
To lose your talisman, a man who contributed to a huge 40 goals in two seasons, is no small matter and thus far Wolves have been relying on players stepping up to fill Cunha’s boots. Marshall Munetsi was dangerous in the first half against Man City but the Zimbabwean international is not a regular goalscorer thus far in his career, nor is Lopez. While Arias is experiencing playing in Europe for the first time and may need some time to adapt.
Fabio Silva is still currently on the books at Molineux but is expected to leave, while Hwang Hee-chan has also been linked with a move to Crystal Palace. A lot of pressure currently lies on the shoulders of Jorgen Strand Larsen to score the goals necessary for Wolves to prosper this season. Despite the 14 league goals the Norwegian scored last season, this still feels like a tall order. Some help for Strand Larsen - potentially in the shape of Uche - could go a long way to help Wolves drag themselves away from a relegation battle before they find themselves in one.
