Tottenham are now said to be moving in on a reported Chelsea target as they look to strengthen at the back.
Tottenham are now said to be moving to sign a reported Chelsea target as they look to hand Thomas Frank more defensive depth. It has been a very solid start to the season from Tottenham, who defeated Manchester City on Saturday to plant their flag in the premature Premier League campaign.
Frank came into this season with challenges aplenty, and while two games do not a season make, there are positive signs aplenty. That said, Frank is going to need more depth in his squad if he and his men are to maintain their early performances, with the North London club also having to contend with Champions League football.
One position where Tottenham need more help, as evidenced by last season when they lost both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero to injuries, is centre-back. Radu Dragusin, who often deputises at the position, is going to remain out for a few months yet, and Frank needs another player.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Bayer Leverkusen star Piero Hincapie is now a serious option, with Spurs looking to get around spending rules, or at least ease their spending, but proposing a loan deal with an obligation to buy.
Romano posted on X: “EXCLUSIVE: Tottenham approach Bayer Leverkusen for Piero Hincapié with new proposal. Loan deal with obligation to buy around €60m, same value as the release clause but to be paid from 2026. Hincapié wants to leave Bayer and #THFC also started discussing personal terms.”
He had previously reported: “Piero Hincapié wants to leave Bayer Leverkusen ahead of the end of the summer window. Premier League clubs attentive after Tottenham made an enquiry 10 days ago. Release clause available: €60m.”
Chelsea were being linked with a move for Hincapie earlier in the window, and many thought they would push ahead with a move after Levi Colwill picked up a serious injury, but Enzo Maresca has since confirmed that the club will look within to replace Colwill due to needs elsewhere and difficulties in freeing up spending money this summer.
Hincapie is very highly rated and he is still only 23 years of age, already racking up 46 international appearances for Ecuador. The defender was part of Leverkusen’s double-winning season under Xabi Alonso in the 2024/25 campaign.
