Jonathan Greenard, Andrew Van Ginkel, Blake Cashman, Ivan Pace Jr., Dallas Turner, Eric Wilson, Kobe King, Bo Richter, Gabriel Murphy
This is among the deepest positions on the roster, and it hasn’t changed since my initial roster projection Aug. 4. Tyler Batty needed an MRI exam on his knee after the Vikings’ final preseason game. He could be a candidate to start on injured reserve. Austin Keys and Chaz Chambliss might be among the final cuts, with a chance to start the season on the practice squad. Van Ginkel hasn’t practiced since Aug. 7 because of injury. It’s worth watching how the Vikings handle the group in light of the 30-year-old’s status.
Byron Murphy Jr., Isaiah Rodgers, Jeff Okudah, Mekhi Blackmon, Dwight McGlothern, Harrison Smith, Josh Metellus, Theo Jackson, Jay Ward, Tavierre Thomas
Smith hasn’t practiced since Aug. 11 because of what the Vikings have called an illness. The team has another two weeks to get the 36-year-old back for the opener. Ward and Thomas started at the two safety spots Friday night, and Thomas, who got $600,000 in guaranteed money to sign with the Vikings, claims the final spot over Kahlef Hailassie.
Will Reichard, Ryan Wright, Andrew DePaola
Oscar Chapman punted three times for the Vikings in preseason games, averaging 49.3 net yards per punt. It could be enough to lead the Vikings to release Wright in favor of the Australian punter, who is making $910,000 less. But Reichard’s missed field-goal try Friday night came after Chapman struggled with the hold, and the Vikings can keep him on their practice squad the entire season through the NFL’s International Player Pathway program. The guess here is Wright’s experience as Reichard’s holder will deter the Vikings from making a change.
