Player ratings: How Albion fared in the 2-0 defeat by Everton

There was some bad luck and a collective display which, while not smooth, should have been enough to spoil the Everton party.

Here is how they performed as individuals.

**Bart Verbruggen 6/10**

He looked calm on the ball and did not have a lot to do but might be disappointed at how he was beaten for the second goal.

**Mats Wieffer 6/10**

It felt like it would not take much for media and fans alike to enthuse over Grealish. Wieffer did not have as torrid a time against him as you might think from the reaction but had been sucked infield for just long enough as the first goal was scored.

**Jan Paul van Hecke 7/10**

Hit the post from outside the box and had a decent game at the back before going forward late on.

**Lewis Dunk 6/10**

Followed Barry a long way ahead of the first goal but seemed to be back in position as the cross came in. Did not really catch the eye in positive or negative sense.

**Max de Cuyper 6/10**

Was out-manoeuvred by Ndiaye at the far post on the opening goal and did not get much chance to attack with menace.

**Carlos Baleba 4/10**

Looked completely out of sorts. Taken off at half-time which Hurzeler explained as “tactical” but that might have been a nice way of saying he kept giving the ball away.

**Yasin Ayari 6/10**

One of the relative positives. Had two shots saved, of which the second was the better effort, and looking quite busy in midfield. But he needs to be harder to get past on occasions.

**Yankuba Minteh 7.5/10**

Scored highly for his ability to ease past his defender but excitement over that is tempered by the final pass he generally produced. Still, he was the biggest threat and forced the penalty.

**Matt O’Riley 5/10**

Was unable to convert a one-on-one which might have changed the game right on half-time. Was not as creative as we have seen in other games and weak against the ball when Ndiaye threatened early.

**Kaoru Mitoma 7/10**

Not everything came off and his touch was not always perfect but one is tempted to be slightly generous with a mark out of ten because he was quite dangerous and active – including ahead of the penalty. One balances that with the fact he was not up against a specialist right-back. The big “if only” of the afternoon involved that volley which flicked off the crossbar.

**Danny Welbeck 4/10**

Yes, the cross arrived slightly behind him. But the scoop over the bar, the tame penalty and the apology at the end all showed it was a bad day.

**Subs – Jack Hinshelwood 6/10**

Sent on at half-time and did a decent job in midfield in difficult circumstances. That is clearly the role Hurzeler prefers for him.

**Diego Gomez, Ferdi Kadioglu, Brajan Gruda all N/A**

Were all introduced with defeat looking increasingly likely. None of them did badly but it was asking too much to make a big difference. And none were really what Albion needed.
