Arne Slot’s Liverpool, after spending heaps of money on the likes of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Hugo Ekitike, may be busy focusing on their Premier League title defence – but the Anfield faithful are growing in concern that a player they let leave the club this summer could come back to bite them.
The Merseyside-based outfit got their season off to a flyer with a 4-2 win over Bournemouth on the opening day and their new summer additions have put them in a strong position to defend their status as the champions of England’s top flight.
Although the Reds – who have now won two Premier League titles – have reinforced their already-stacked squad over the summer, that also came at the expense of some players moving on. And that includes 22-year-old English midfielder Tyler Morton.

Reds boss Slot, evidently, didn’t see a future for the youngster in the Liverpool engine room and, as a result, he joined French side Olympique Lyonnais, who are currently managed by Paulo Fonseca, for a fee of £15 million earlier in August.
Having emerged through Liverpool’s fabled academy ranks, Wallasey-born Morton – a 13-cap England Under-21 international – enjoyed loan stints at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City in back-to-back seasons as a means of getting senior minutes under his belt.

But he never got a full crack of the whip at entering first-team proceedings at Anfield, as evidenced by his 14 appearances. Now, in France, the defence-minded midfielder, who was linked to West Ham United earlier in the summer, is enjoying a brilliant start to life at his new club.
Morton got his first taste of Ligue 1 action in a 1-0 win over Lens on 16 August before another 90-minute display against FC Metz caught the eye of Liverpool fans a week later. Against the latter, he put in a stellar display: 84 touches of the ball, three passes into the final third, while he also won all four of his ground duels.

Voted as Man of the Match by Les Gones after excelling in a deep-lying role, it’s clear that he’s settled well into his new surroundings and that this could be the start of a very promising career. Up next for Morton is impressing England boss Thomas Tuchel.
After picking up the award in his second outing for his new employers, Morton had a message for the Groupama Stadium faithful: "Hi Olympique Lyonnais fans, I'm so grateful for being selected as Man of the Match. I'm very grateful for your welcoming and I can't wait for the season. I'll see you soon!"
Fresh off the back of his first two appearances in Lyon colours, Liverpool fans are hoping that the club doesn’t live to regret their decision to let him go. “Really hope we have a buy-back clause,” one supporter said as another added: “We will regret this one…”
From a Liverpool perspective, fans are worried about their lack of a No.6 – a midfielder who can screen well in front of the back four – as one said that Morton would have eventually been given a chance to prove himself to Slot and Co. They wrote:
“We should have included a buyback clause. I don't understand why we didn't, but he deserved a chance. With no number 6 in the team, he could have slowly gotten a chance. I don't understand why we sold him so quickly.”

Confused by Slot – who is widely regarded as one of the best managers in football – and his team’s reason behind selling such a prestigious talent in the young Morton, a fourth – and final – fan took to X (formerly Twitter) to write: “I don’t understand why we sold him.”
